People always ask me, “how do you start your paintings”?
As you can see, I usually start off with a good drawing on the canvas. Sort of mapping out. I hate being midway through a painting only to discover something is off, disproportioned, etc. Make sure your drawing is tight , this will cut down on mistakes and saves you time. That’s just one way to do it...there are as many ways as there are artist.
As an artist it should be your goal to develop your own technique...young grasshopper!

Maurice

Here is a piece that was a lot of work but a lot of fun. The sketch was in my sketch book for years, then finally I decided to create the painting. First the idea, next the sketch, then redrawn on final size wood panel. I added a couch, a table, guitar, and abstract paintings on the wall to create an environment. Sorry, the photo doesn’t do justice to the vibrancy, heavy texture, and size of the piece. The piece was sold in Oklahoma at the OK Mozart festival. I miss this piece.

Not all birds fly...some swim, some prefer to run. The metaphor is that there are many ways to travel. You just have to be open to many possibilities. I decided to let go of my creative constraints and my art grew wings!

The Dogon Tribe

If you haven’t heard of the Dogon Tribe I think you will find them very intriguing. This West African tribe claims that aliens gave them the knowledge of a companion star to Sirius. The companion star known as Sirius B. A star which isn’t visible to the naked eye. The first time Sirius B is photographed is 1970. Dogan priests told two french anthropologists the story of Sirius B and it’s exact location in 1930. The Dogon also knew that Sirius B was smaller, and heavier than the earth. How did a people who lacked modern technology know so much about the Sirius system?

According to the Dogon oral traditions, a race of people from the Sirius system called the Nommos visited the earth thousands of years ago. The Nommos gave the Dogan the knowledge of Sirius B.

Of course this is the short version. Google, Youtube it for yourself. The Nommos are described as more fishlike than human, and had to live in water. The story of the Dogons and the Nommos inspired me to create the piece above.
